Martial arts is the vehicle. What students carry with them is confidence in who they are, trust in what they’re capable of, and the tools to keep learning, growing and moving through life with purpose.

Martial arts has something to offer at every age, but what students need from their training changes throughout their lives. That’s why each of our five programs is intentionally designed around the developmental stage of the students in it.

The physical curriculum progresses in depth and complexity, while the life skills we teach evolve right alongside it. Confidence, focus, responsibility, self-awareness, leadership and resilience look different at four than they do at fourteen or forty. Our goal is to make both the martial arts and the lessons within it meaningful and relevant to the person standing in front of us.

Whether a student is beginning their journey as a Little Ninja, stepping onto the mat for the first time as a teenager or discovering martial arts as an adult, we meet them where they are and give them the opportunity to learn, grow and discover what they’re capable of.

Age ranges provide a starting point, but every student is different. If you’re unsure which program is the best fit for you or your child, we’re happy to help you find the right place to begin.

Programs by age

Ages 4–5

Little Ninjas

Thirty minutes, once a week, for four and five year olds. They learn the foundations of martial arts alongside the balance, coordination, focus and listening that make those possible. Most of it feels like a game, because at four and five that is how children learn best.

Kids students holding their new rank certificates

Ages 6–8

Kids

Thirty minutes, twice a week, for ages six to eight. Students become white belts and begin the formal ranking journey, with a curriculum of their own to know and the responsibility of learning it. The self-defense starts here too, including how to break away from a grab.

Youth students with rank certificates after a promotion

Ages 9–11

Youth

Forty five minutes, twice a week, for ages nine to eleven. This is where the self-defense becomes genuinely practical: grabs and attacks, takedowns, containments and joint locks, and much more work with a partner, which means learning control and trust.

Teen students lined up on the mats after a promotion

Ages 12–16

Teen

Forty five minutes, twice a week, for ages twelve to sixteen. The same path as Youth, taken further. Older students understand the mechanics of a technique more completely, so the self-defense goes deeper and there is more work with a partner.

Instructors wearing True North Martial Arts uniforms

Ages 16+

Adult

One hour, twice a week, for ages sixteen and up. The system at its fullest: blocking, striking, kicking, takedowns, containment, joint locks and submissions, taught as practical self-defense. You do not need to be in shape to start.
